Short Sighted (Myopia)

Diagnosis of Myopia:

When driving, have the road signs become blurrier and blurrier? Are you having trouble making out faces from across the street? If so, you may be short sighted.

Another term for short sightedness is Myopia. People face myopia if their eye is too elongated from the front to the rear or if the cornea has too much curvature. Because of this, light focuses in the front of the retina instead of directly on the retina, creating blurred long distance vision.

Short-sighted people are able to see close up objects clearly, but objects in the distance are blurry and indistinct. People with moderate to high levels of myopia are unable to recognise things beyond arm's length without their glasses on.

Vision Correction Procedures and Treatments for Myopia:

For immediate correction, one can utilize prescription eye glasses or contact lenses to see distances more clearly. These compensate for the curvature of the cornea.

Today, there are more options to correct your vision that do not include the hassle of carrying around eye glasses or putting in contact lenses every morning.

Laser surgery corrects myopia by making the central cornea flatter and reducing the curvature, thereby refocussing light rays onto the retina. Myopia can be classified by three degrees. The first of which is low which is indicated between 0 and -4. Moderate is between -4 and -8 and High is -8 and above.

Though all degrees can be improved, a higher degree of myopia may not be able to be completely corrected. In this instance, one may still have to wear a small prescription lens for certain activities depending on the level of improvement.

Refractive surgeries are safe vision correction treatments that can fix your blurred distance eye sight and can remove the need to carry glasses or put in contact lenses.

A virtually painless surgery, LASIK is an outpatient procedure that can be carried out in Vision Eye Institute Clinics, as well as other vision corrective procedures.  Recovery time is minimal and you can be back to your regular routine within days!
