Eyelid Surgery

Wrinkling and sagging of the eyelid typically starts to appear in the mid-thirties and continues to develop with age. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that aims to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids, and the fatty pockets under the eyes.

The upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty are two different procedures, which can be performed together or separately. The blepharoplasty procedure is type of cosmetic surgery procedure that is common among both men and women.

The cosmetic eyelid surgery procedure involves the eyelid structure and surrounding tissue only and takes 1-3 hours to complete. In an upper blepharoplasty, the excess skin and overstretched muscle fibres are removed, along with protruding fatty tissue. A lower eye lid procedure is performed in a similar manner, or it can be performed from inside the lid. The incision is very fine and usually heals without scarring. There is not a long recovery after eyelid surgery.  Most patients will experience minor to moderate swelling and bruising of the eye area for only 7-10 days. 

How much eyelid surgery costs is influenced by the surgeon’s rates, the use of the surgical facility, and the cost of anaesthesia. The average blepharoplasty cost for upper blepharoplasty is $3000-$5000.

Lower eyelids typically cost $3000-$6000. Eyelid surgery worth is very high because once the fatty pockets are removed from the eye area, they do not come back.

Eyelid surgery results are usually permanent. 

Double eyelid surgery, which is surgery on both the upper and lower eyelids, is very common for patients. The surgeon will probably work on the upper eyelids first, before the lower blepharoplasty.

Double eyelid surgery cost is in the same range as the separate blepharoplasty, but some doctors may offer discounted rates when both procedures are performed together.

There is no interference with the eye itself, so there should not be concern about visual impairment.  Complications are rare with eyelid surgery, and are usually minor when they occur. Most common complications result from reactions to anaesthesia. You can reduce risk by closely following your doctor’s instructions.

After surgery, you will experience swelling and bruising of the eye area. Cold compresses can ease these symptoms. The stitches will be removed about 5 days after surgery. Most patients are back to normal in 7-10 days, but sensitivity to sunlight and irritants may persist for a few weeks.
