Dr Joseph Reich
Dr Joseph Reich is a specialist cataract and refractive surgeon who trained at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.

After graduation, following visits to the United Kingdom and United States, he was appointed as a consultant ophthalmologist to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital where he has acted as Chairman of the Senior Medical Staff, Head of Clinic and the Deputy Director of the Clinical School. He is heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training and has written many articles in the area of medical education.

When refractive surgery first came to Australia, Dr Reich was a foundation member of the Melbourne Excimer Laser Group and performed the first laser procedure in Victoria in 1991. Since then he has maintained a continuous practice in refractive laser and has been involved in development of Excimer laser and LASIK surgery. He has been on both international and Australian panels and presented papers in the United States and Australia on the subject.

With his partners he developed the Camberwell Eye Clinic Day Surgery Centre and in 1987 was invited to contribute to the formulation of policy for the Victorian Government to assist in legislation allowing for ophthalmic day surgery in the state. He was also on the National Day Surgery Committee for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and formulated the initial standards for ophthalmic day surgery for the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists. He currently holds the position of international editor for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Basic Science Cataract 2008 text book.

His current clinical interests include laser refractive surgery, cataract surgery and complex refractive lens exchange including a large clinical experience with the multifocal lens implant and the toric lens correction of astigmatism.

He is in private practice at the Vision Eye Institute Camberwell and Coburg and Vision Laser St Kilda Road.
