Dr Frank Howes

Dr Frank Howes specialises in refractive surgery, glaucoma and cataract surgery.

Dr Howes has a special interest in keratoconus and all aspects of cataract and refractive surgery as well as intra-ocular lens design. He also has strong interest in ophthalmic lasers. Dr Howes has been performing laser vision correction since 1995 and has done over 5000 procedures.

Dr Howes studied medicine at the University of Cape Town Medical School graduating in 1979 and completed his ophthalmology registrarship in December1988 at the University of Witwatersrand. Vitreo-Retinal fellowship in 1989 under Dr Francois Potgeiter, Universitas Hospital, University of the Orange Free State. Glaucoma fellowship 1991-92, under Professor Graham Trope, University of Toronto, Canada. International Excimer Laser fellowship in 1995 at Black Hills Regional Eye Institute, South Dakota, USA. Cataract and Refractive fellowship in 1996, Manchester, UK.

Director of Ophthalmic Services, Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, West Yorkshire UK 1998-2005, Associate Professor Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bond University Queensland, 2006 to present. Honorary Lecturer, QUT School of Optometry, 2005 to present.

Dr Howes has published over 20 articles, has authored seven textbook chapters and is a regular reviewer for the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Graefe’s archives of Ophthalmology.

He is known for his water-sports and triathlon interests. He represented South Africa as a Springbok oarsman in 1982.

Dr Howes provides his specialist services at Vision Eye Institute and Vision Laser River City and Mt Gravatt in Brisbane, Southport and Coolangatta.
